Our proposal is to foster interest in Mathematics.

From August 1st to 9th, 2018, Rio de Janeiro will host the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM 2018) in the Riocentro convention center.

Hosting the first ICM in Latin America, as well as in the Southern Hemisphere, is a great honor and a unique opportunity for all of us, especially those pioneers who not so long ago helped to create and disseminate mathematics research in Brazil. That is why our community has been working toward an unforgettable ICM since Rio was picked as host city, in the 2014 General Assembly of the International Mathematical Union in Gyeongju, South Korea.

The first editions of the ICM occurred at a historic crossroads where the very foundations of mathematics were being tested. Over a hundred years later, we have new challenges ahead: how to make mathematics more global, better known and spread throughout the planet. At this ICM, we will have the opportunity to expand the region's major breakthroughs in mathematical research and education. ICM in Rio will not only preserve the high scientific standard of the series, but will also usher in a new era of progress and visibility for Mathematics in Brazil and other developing countries. This expectation is reflected in our offers of support for participant travel and in our various educational initiatives.

We are confident that the seeds we plant will bear fruit for years to come!
